YeeWittleThings

Company Overview

Brandi Yee is the owner and writer of YeeWittleThings, a family-friendly blog that offers product reviews, giveaways, recipes and lifestyle information to its readers. Yee is happily married, has two kids and takes pride in writing about family-focused topics.

Yee’s passion lies in her blog. “I started my blog over six years ago as a way of creating an outlet for my passion of writing, but also to connect with families and offer them recipes, honest reviews on family-friendly products and the opportunities to try those products themselves,” she says.

Yee is constantly creating new, engaging content and encourages her readers to share their comments, pictures and stories on YeeWittleThings.com. “My website is extremely important to me. It helps me connect with my readers and provides them with a friendly place to find new information. It’s also a way for me to connect with companies and help promote their products and services in a safe and reliable environment.”

Challenges

I was shocked to discover one day that my site had been compromised due to malware,” says Yee. “When something like that happens, it puts everything on hold”

Yee got word from her hosting provider that YeeWittleThings.com was suspended due to malware. YeeWittleThings is powered by WordPress, a popular target for hackers looking to steal data and mailing lists (among other things). Her entire WordPress site was shut down, preventing her from posting new content and her customers from accessing her blog. To top it all off, Google blacklisted YeeWittleThings.com, meaning her site was completely removed from the Google index. Unfortunately, before the site was suspended, others noticed the malware as well and she quickly began receiving emails from her friends, clients and readers regarding the issue.

“I was shocked to discover one day that my site had been compromised due to malware,” says Yee. “When something like that happens, it puts everything on hold—including website traffic and scheduled sponsored posts. It’s very stressful and discouraging, especially if you’re not tech-savvy. I had readers and companies messaging me asking when my site would be up and running. Thankfully, my readers and companies I work with were very understanding and patient as I worked with SiteLock and my web host to get my site cleaned and functional.”

Solution & Results

“I honestly am not sure what I would have done without the expertise of SiteLock and their incredible staff”

After learning about Yee’s situation, SiteLock suggested implementing the SiteLock® TrueShield web application firewall and SiteLock Premium scanner on YeeWittleThings.

SiteLock TrueShield WAF
  • spam comments blocked
  • malicious bots blocked

With SiteLock TrueShield, all comment spam was detected and removed from the blog, restricting hackers from posting spam links and unsolicited advertisements as comments. SiteLock analyzed the results form TrueShield on YeeWittleThings for a 30-day time frame. In the first month, 16,000 malicious bots were blocked with over 50 percent of that traffic identified as comment spam attempts from bad bots. With TrueShield in place, over 1,000 suspected malicious bots were asked to fill out a CAPTCHA challenge, in which zero passed, keeping her site secure.

SiteLock Premium Scanner
  • files scanned

The SiteLock Premium scanner was added to identify and remove malware, as well as detect vulnerabilities on her site. The Premium scanner provides a daily comprehensive analysis of Yee’s website frorm the inside-out. When known malware is detected, the scanner will automatically remove it. Over the same 30-day period, more than 165,000 of Yee’s files were scanned, averaging 5,500 files per day. Had these products not been placed on YeeWittleThings.com, the malware could have been modified to create a backdoor file, giving the hacker complete access to all of Yee’s website and customer data.

“I honestly am not sure what I would have done without the expertise of SiteLock and their incredible staff,” Yee says. “They offered me so much support and help during a time when I was stressed and worried, and they assured me things would be okay. I was thrilled that within a day, my site was back up and running, along with a protection plan that would help keep it safe from future attacks.”

RicardoSerpa

Company Overview

RicardoSerpa.com is a website dedicated to the photographic work and professional blog of Ricardo Serpa. Serpa first began his career in photography over 25 years ago when he left his day job as an export manager in Brazil to chase his true passion, photography. He became a photojournalist at Jornal Do Brasil, a Brazilian newspaper, where he worked for three years before deciding to pursue photography on his own terms.

Serpa knew that as an independent photojournalist he needed a way to share his photography portfolio, so he created RicardoSerpa.com. The website allows Serpa to share his photo galleries of trips he has made around the world, stay in touch with his audience, and provide information on his new endeavors such as teaching. “My website is the single most important aspect of my life as a professional photographer. It is my window to the world; my own way of showcasing my work and promoting my travels.” Without his website, Serpa would not be able to reach and interact with his audience the way he is able to now.

Challenges

Serpa also found that his website descriptions had been redirected and were advertising everything from pharmaceutical drugs to weight loss and dating websites.

Serpa relies on his website as an illustration of his work and talent. That’s why he was devastated to find that he had been flagged by Google as a potentially hacked website. “I suspected something wasn’t right when I started to notice missing emails, both incoming and outgoing. No explanation for the mystery, until the day I did a search for my own site and realized Google had “red flagged” it,” said Serpa.

Upon further investigation, Serpa also found that his website descriptions had been redirected and were advertising everything from pharmaceutical drugs to weight loss and dating websites. He knew he needed to remediate the issue quickly, “It was a matter of doing a lot of research and finding the best way to solve the problem.” That’s when Serpa reached out to SiteLock for the solution.

Solution & Results

“Having my website compromised made me realize how important it is to keep it safe and “bullet-proof” when it comes to cyber attacks like the one I was a victim of.

The SiteLock team got right to work cleaning up Serpa’s website. They upgraded RicardoSerpa.com to the SiteLock® INFINITY package, which includes SiteLock® SMART, Secure Malware and Removal Tool, as well as SiteLock® TrueShield web application firewall. In addition, SiteLock deployed the Expert Services team to do a manual clean of the website making sure all malware was removed. The Expert Services team quickly identified hundreds of spam comments on the website and removed them.

SiteLock TrueShield WAF
  • Blocked threats
  • Blocked over malicious bots

Within 12 hours, Serpa’s website had been cleaned manually by the SiteLock team and both SMART and TrueShield had been configured.

SMART went to work finding and removing malware and providing continuous comprehensive website file scanning to identify malware, algorithms, backdoor files and malicious coding. When malware is detected, SMART automatically removes it. Within the first three scans of RicardoSerpa.com, SMART detected and removed 122 malicious files. SMART has continued to analyze an average of 4,625 files each day for the last 30 days for RicardoSerpa.com and no additional malware has been detected.

SiteLock SMART
  • Scanned files

TrueShield is an important part of the INFINITY package and was installed to protect RicardoSerpa.com from all future attacks and attempted intrusions. Since configuration, TrueShield has blocked 2,318 threats and 136 bad bots by employing a CAPTCHA. TrueShield has also blocked 89 attempts to access illegal resources and blocked one SQL injection attempt, effectively preventing Serpa’s website from being hacked.

In addition to cleaning and protecting Serpa’s site, SiteLock also reached out to Google to have RicardoSerpa.com re-indexed so his fans and potential customers could once again access his work.

After an eye-opening experience, Serpa is relieved that his website is now fully protected, “Having my website compromised made me realize how important it is to keep it safe and “bullet-proof” when it comes to cyber attacks like the one I was a victim of. I’m really happy with the peace of mind SiteLock provided me, and I can fully recommend it!”

FuturePastFifty

Company Overview

George Greene is the website developer for FuturePastFifty.com, a WordPress website devoted to providing resources, ideas and community for people over the age of 50. The site is the creation of Nancy Burke and Marg Penn Ph.D. Together they bring years of life coaching and consulting experience, as well as a passion for transitioning people through changes in life to the website.

George joined the team in 2014, “As I am also past 50, I welcomed the chance to work with Marg and Nancy on their website helping “experienced” workers stay vital, valuable and fulfilled.” He created the original FuturePastFifty and has been integral to the success of the website ever since.

Challenges

“With the help of my hosting provider, I tried to get rid of the problem, but it quickly became apparent that we were out of our league.”

This past January, George and team were startled to find that their site was being targeted by hackers who were redirecting visitors from FuturePastFifty to another bogus website. The team was notified when their website host identified the malware on the site and suspended it, preventing visitors from accessing the site. “Our infection was stealthy and it took a while before it brought our WordPress installation to its knees,” said George.

Marg and George knew they needed to take action quickly, as each moment the website was offline was a potential visitor lost. As a developer, George knew that the threat was very real. “Malware that infects your website to send spam or commit other nefarious crimes can affect your site’s ranking and can easily get your site — and emails from your domain — blacklisted.” FuturePastFifty’s host recommended they reach out to SiteLock® to identify and remove the malware— getting the website back up ASAP.

As George explained, “With the help of my hosting provider, I tried to get rid of the problem, but it quickly became apparent that we were out of our league. The host recommended escalating our service plan at SiteLock and they immediately had a special ops team of experts rooting out insurgent malware and hardening our account.”

Solution & Results

“When I called and asked for my account manager, I actually got her, not just the next support person in line…there were no misunderstandings and no delays.”

As soon as George and Marg got in touch with SiteLock, the SiteLock team began working to remove the existing malicious content and restoring the website. SiteLock provided them with the SiteLock® INFINITY package, which removed the redirect and prevented the issue from happening again. INFINITY includes SiteLock® SMART, Secure Malware and Removal Tool, as well as SiteLock® TrueShield web application firewall (WAF).

SiteLock SMART
  • Scanned files
  • Found and removed redirect script

SMART provides a daily comprehensive analysis of the FuturePastFifty website from the inside out. When malware is detected, the scanner automatically removes it. The SiteLock team used the SMART scanner to analyze over 72,924 files for FuturePastFifty. SMART was able to identify the malicious code that was redirecting to the hacker’s site and removed it, restoring FuturePastFifty to its normal state.

SiteLock TrueShield WAF
  • Blocked malicious bots
  • Blocked over blacklisted requests

TrueShield WAF was installed to protect FuturePastFifty from future attacks. Current analysis shows that TrueShield has already blocked over 1,328 malicious bot attempts and more than 2,000 attempted visits from blacklisted countries.

Through the installation of INFINITY, FuturePastFifty has been restored and Marg and Nancy are now able to continue providing coaching advice and resources to their website visitors. George shared his thoughts on the experience. “Security was not a problem—until it became one. It wasn’t fun learning this the hard way. Luckily, our wonderful account manager was emailing and calling us about the status of our website every step of the way. When I called and asked for my account manager, I actually got her, not just the next support person in line. I didn’t have to repeat myself over and over. There were no misunderstandings and no delays. We’ve learned a great deal about what we can do on our end to protect our site, but most importantly, we now know when to call in the experts!”

Smallbizapalooza

Company Overview

Smallbizapalooza.com is one of three websites founded and run by Ivana Taylor. Taylor brings a passion for small business marketing to her many pursuits, striving to share with others the tools and tips she has learned. The concept for Smallbizapalooza was to create a platform where entrepreneurs could engage with brands and experts who are committed to small business success. Taylor describes her goal, “The idea was to open a space where experts could share their success strategies, answer small business questions and entrepreneurs could learn about the best books, brands, tools and strategies that could help them succeed.”

Taylor thinks of Smallbizapalooza as a “channel” where she produces sponsored content from relevant brands and influencers. The result is a website that offers everything from interviews with successful entrepreneurs, to marketing and general business practices, interactive chats and discussions, and educational videos with tips from a variety of experts.

Challenges

“I was scared to think about how the malware impacted the website. I was concerned that I was the cause of malware spreading to my audience.”

Smallbizapalooza’s success is due in no small part to her regularly active online community. That’s why when Taylor noticed an unusual increase in traffic to the website she was quick to investigate. Taylor describes discovering the pharmaceutical hack, “I went to Google and searched ‘site:smallbizapalooza.com’ and that’s when I saw all the hacked pages.” She was alarmed, “I was scared to think about how the malware impacted the website. I was concerned that I was the cause of malware spreading to my audience and that’s very sad.”

At the recommendation of her hosting provider, Taylor reached out to SiteLock for a solution. The SiteLock team quickly identified that Smallbizapalooza had been the target of a pharmaceutical hack. Hackers had taken over Smallbizapalooza to advertise the sale of prescription drugs. Google recognized the hack and warned Taylor’s clients not to proceed to the website.

Solution & Results

“You can certainly say that hacks are inevitable— but when it happens to you, it’s frustrating because fixing it is a delicate process and you need to work with someone who can do it quickly and safely.”

SiteLock knew the pharmaceutical ads needed to be removed immediately. Expert Services performed a manual clean and installed SiteLock® SMART, Secure Malware and Removal Tool, as well as SiteLock® TrueShield web application firewall, thus providing a complete security solution.

SiteLock Premium Scanner
  • Scanned files
  • Removed malicious ad placement code

SMART provides a daily, comprehensive website file analysis on Smallbizapalooza.com. When malware is detected, the scanner automatically removes it. The SiteLock team used SMART to analyze over 15,530 files for Smallbizapalooza. It was able to identify the malicious code that was placing the ads on Taylor’s website and causing Google to flag it. SiteLock removed the malware and returned Smallbizapalooza to working order.

SiteLock TrueShield WAF
  • Blocked over malicious bots

TrueShield was installed to protect Smallbizapalooza from future attacks. Current analysis shows that TrueShield has already blocked over 1,000 malicious bot access attempts since the attack, keeping Smallbizapalooza up and running!

Together with SiteLock, Taylor was able to get Smallbizapalooza cleaned and back in order within a week and return to sharing great advice and motivating the business community. After this experience Taylor shared, “You can certainly say that hacks are inevitable—but when it happens to you, it’s frustrating because fixing it is a delicate process and you need to work with someone who can do it quickly and safely.”

Obsidian Group

Company Overview

Obsidian Group is a human asset management firm focused on delivering results-oriented consulting services. Founder and President, John Perry, serves his clients by concentrating on four primary segments: human resource consulting, talent acquisition, marketing services and business solutions. Perry has built his business on the belief that talent and human assets drive culture and success. With this mindset, Obsidian Group has helped its clients achieve their goals for over 13 years.

“We started Obsidian Group in 2003, primarily as a talent acquisition company in the IT, finance, and accounting space,” Perry says. “During the economic turmoil of the late 2000’s, we enhanced our offers to include consulting in the HR, small business and marketing arenas. When we did this, our website had to be first class and reflect the professionalism of our firm. It is our face to the business world and critical to our success.”

Faced with a Challenge

“We use our site, not only for potential customers to view our credentials, but also as a way for us to post jobs. When it’s down, we instantaneously lose the talent business, our prime source of revenue.”

The Obsidian Group website, obsidiangrp.net, was redirecting to another, unintended website. When site visitors attempted to visit obsidiangrp.net, they would end up on a malicious website instead. Hackers use website redirects to steal site traffic and data. Redirects can also negatively impact a company’s reputation.

“We use our site, not only for potential customers to view our credentials, but also as a way for us to post jobs and solicit candidates’ resumes and credentials,” Perry says. “When it’s down, we instantaneously lose the talent business, our prime source of revenue.”

Finding a Solution

“WordPress security plugins do an adequate job, but you need something more effective to monitor and prevent attacks from re-occurring. . .”

The SiteLock team implemented security solutions specific to the site’s attack. Obsidian Group needed a solution that would not only fix the issue, but also prevent it from happening again. The SiteLock® SMART scanner and SiteLock® TrueShield web application firewall (WAF) were placed on obsidiangrp.net.

SiteLock SMART Scanner
  • Scanned files

SMART scans obsidiangrp.net daily in search of malware signatures and links. Over 100 pages and 200 links are analyzed each day, providing the firm with constant surveillance. SMART advises Perry if any files have changed since the previous scan, helping him determine who has been accessing his website and when. SiteLock reviewed the site’s SMART scan statistics for a 30-day time period and found that over 70,000 files were scanned. If SMART finds malicious files or code on Perry’s website, they are removed automatically.

SiteLock TrueShield WAF
  • Blocked over malicious bots

TrueShield WAF actively protects Obsidian Group from malicious traffic and harmful requests. With TrueShield, safe traffic is allowed to enter the site, while harmful traffic is blocked. The website’s WAF statistics were reviewed for the same 30-day time frame, revealing that over 360 bots were denied access to obsidiangrp.net. SiteLock blocked four SQL injection attempts, a technique cybercriminals use to attack data-driven web applications. A total of 21 bots were asked to complete a CAPTCHA challenge, in which all 21 failed to pass.

Perry reflects on his website hack, “WordPress security plugins do an adequate job, but you need something more effective to monitor and prevent attacks from re-occurring, as the disruption is chaotic for any business owner. Cybersecurity is needed now more than ever. Knowing your site is 99.9 percent secure with SiteLock allows you to concentrate on what you do best.”

SgtDavidCoullard.org

Website Background

SgtDavidCoullard.com is a website dedicated to the Sergeant David Coullard Memorial Fund. Coullard first enlisted with the Marines in 1994 at the age of 21. He was a member of the Marine Corp’s Sniper Unit Weapons Division and served in South Carolina, the Philippines and Okinawa, Japan. Coullard completed his commitment in 2003, but in 2004, he re-enlisted out of love of his country. In 2005, he deployed to Iraq. On August 1, 2005, Sergeant David Coullard gave his life serving his country. His mother, Anita Coullard Dziedzic, founded SgtDavidCoullard.com to honor her late son’s memory.

Dziedzic uses the website to raise awareness for upcoming fundraising events, keep in touch with her supporters and share her son’s story. The money Dziedzic raises supports Paralyzed Veterans of America, Semper Fi Fund, Mutts Mending Military Fund and Honor Flight New England. “My website is important to me because it is a way to try to get out the information about our organization and what we provide to our service men and women,” said Dziedzic.

Challenges

When her host reached out and informed her that she had malware on her site, Dziedzic knew she had to do something quickly.

SgtDavidCoullard.com is often updated with upcoming fundraising events and is always accepting donations. When her host reached out and informed her that she had malware on her site, Dziedzic knew she had to do something quickly. Malware is designed to harm or secretly access a website without the owner’s knowledge. If the malware is not removed in a timely manner, Google could blacklist the website. If SgtDavidCoullard.com became blacklisted, it would be inaccessible to visitors and potential donors.

At the recommendation of her hosting provider, Dziedzic reached out to SiteLock for a solution.

Solution and Result

Within two hours of talking to SiteLock, SMART and TrueShield were configured and on the job of cleaning and protecting the website.

SiteLock understood the importance of getting SgtDavidCoullard.com cleaned as quickly as possible, providing her with the SiteLock® INFINITY package, which includes SiteLock® SMART (Secure Malware and Removal Tool), SiteLock® TrueShield web application firewall and unlimited expert services support from the team at SiteLock. Within two hours of talking to SiteLock, SMART and TrueShield were configured and on the job of cleaning and protecting the website.

SiteLock SMART Scanner
  • Scanned files

SMART provides continuous comprehensive website file scanning on SgtDavidCoullard.com to identify malware, algorithms, backdoor files and malicious coding. When malware is detected, the scanner automatically removes it. The SiteLock Expert Services team combined with SMART removed 42 malware files within the first six hours of installation. SMART has continued to scan SgtDavidCoullard.com and analyzed 3,455 website files in the last 30 days. Together with TrueShield, SMART has kept the website free and clear of malware.

SiteLock TrueShield WAF
  • Blocked over malicious threats

TrueShield was also installed to protect SgtDavidCoullard.com from all future attacks. Current analysis shows that TrueShield has blocked over 920 threats including 26 bad bots, 29 attempts on illegal resources and two SQL injection attempts in the last 30 days alone. This keeps Dziedzic’s site up and running, and allows for her fundraising to continue. Dziedzic now has a clean and fully functioning website. She says of her experience, “The people at SiteLock were very nice to work with.”
